The Writers Book
From the minute I opened my mail, I’ve been enjoying this book. This is some HEAT ! ! ! I recently received an advance copy of The Writers Book which was compiled / authored by Roller. This is a must have for any writer. Part history lesson, part style archive and part workbook; this is a great resource for OG’s and the young guns alike. The first part of the book features a sweet selection of 2 page spreads of writers who started the contemporary graffiti movement back in the 60’s and 70’s. Legends like Phase 2, Chaz Bojorquez, Dondi and Al Diaz. It then transitions into some of the current active writers like Jaber, Aware R.I.P., Dais, Smite, Itchie and Soda to name a few of the writers featured. It’s a nice selection of writers you know and some that you should know! This book hits. It’s a fun read, a blast from the past and a get to know ya for some of today’s most talented writers from around the globe. I appreciate the wide ranging roster on these pages. It’s not meant to be a comprehensive graffiti library, but more of an eye opener and a reference guide. It also features a curated list of books and documentaries that represent the culture and not just the art.
The history lesson is tight, but the best part of the book comes next: over 100 pages of raw, photorealistic and illustrated backdrops to hit up. Including trains, buses, trucks, dumpsters, walls and subway platforms all waiting for you to fill up with your best tags, sketches and pieces. This is not a coloring book. Writers know what to do with this part of the book. Upon opening my copy I broke out my markers and started filling the pages up with colorful owls before I even read the first half. I murked some pages and now it’s time to recruit some friends to add their hands to my book. The Writers Book is way better than a black book or a blank sticker for collecting tags and pieces. The backgrounds on these pages are more creative and satisfying to work in than a blank white page. After these pages are filled with other writers it’s going to be an epic collection of contemporary street heads to complement the writers featured in the first half. Filling the second half of the book up is the real fun!
