Summer Reading List
Back in school, you always despised the summer reading list. Why do i have to read over summer? As a kid, summer was for baseball and the beach and ice cream. No time for reading. Now as an adult, I can’t wait to start cracking books while sitting on the beach or in the backyard under a tree. How ironic, right? I thought I would share a few of the titles I read this summer. I’m not done yet, either. Still have a few on the To Be Read List.
In no particular order:
Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy : you may know him as the author of “No Country for Old Men”. Enough said. A captivating read about a kid making his way across the southwest in the late 1800’s. Lots of scalps. Lots of violence.
Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr : i recently discovered this author and now i can’t read enough of his works. I enjoy his writing style of short chapters that jump from character to character and transcends different time periods with complete disregard for any continuity.
When We Cease to Understand the World by Benjamin Labatut : Historical Fiction that is merged with some Non-Fiction. It’s some heady stuff, quantum physics and all, but it’s quite interesting how he imagines some of the drama amongst these intellectuals.
The Plot Against America by Philip Roth : Written 20 years ago and it seems highly relevant now. It imagines the “what if” Lindbergh had won the Presidency and pulled America towards the Nazis of Germany. Great writing style to go along with the story.
The Creative Act by Rick Rubin : i know, this was hyped up last year, but i take my time getting around to these things. I enjoyed it, it may even receive it’s own write up in a future posting. It’s quite deep, very abstract and obtuse at times and deals in contradictions, but the message resonates highly with this artist. Be. Be now. Create. Don’t Stop. Unless you want to Stop.
